Welcome to my new little project

Vern Six (Senior PHP Developer)Welcome to my new little project… AskVernAnything.com

The idea for this site is pretty simple… you get to ask any question you like, and I will attempt to give you an answer.  The questions shouldn’t be about me though.  😉

You can ask me anything you like about any topic you want to know more about.  If I don’t know the answer, I will investigate it and get you and answer.  If I am unable to find the answer after researching it, I will probably just make something up.

This should be fun!

I hope you play along… click on the link to the left that says “ASK YOUR QUESTION” and then after you are done submitting your questions, be sure to check back daily to see if I have answered your question yet or not.

Things you need to learn about the web

I am about to open my own business soon.  I know nothing about websites.  What do you suggest?

Oh my!  This is a question that is right up my alley.   Let’s see if I can answer this question without sounding too much like a salesman.  Wait!  Maybe I want to sound like a salesman.  LOL

When you decide to go into business for yourself, there is a lot to learn.  Trust me.  I’ve been a serial entrepreneur most of my adult life.  I haven’t met a business owner yet that knew everything in advance of opening his/her doors.  Thanks to all the resources available online, opening a business is much easier than it used to be.  But it will still require that you learn some things and pay attention to details like never before. Driving on the shoulder in Texas? It’s just stupid!

I follow you on Facebook and noticed you posted a photo of a broken windshield.  You said this was caused by someone driving in the Emergency Lane to the right of the road?  Is this really allowed in Texas?  Why?

broken-windshieldThe short answer is… yes, it is allowed.  And the photo to the left is MY WINDSHIELD because somebody decided I needed to pass!  Ugh!!!!

I was a very good distance behind him, but because he wanted me to pass, I complied.  As I got closer to him, his vehicle threw a rock up and it busted my windshield!

If I wanted to pass him, I would have using the already existing passing lane.  Instead he was insisting that I pass him and he drove on the shoulder (that’s what we call it here in Texas) where all the debris and other hazards are located.

The law says that it’s legal to drive on the right shoulder for a variety of reasons but I must say, I think it has to be one of the dumbest laws ever created.

Do all chickens sit on their nest to hatch chicks?

Do all chickens sit on their nest to hatch chicks?

I could write an entire book on this subject, but I will try to keep this answer from getting that long.  😉

A broody hen can be a blessing or curse, depending on your outlook.  If you want higher egg production, a broody hen will be a disappointment to you for sure.  When a hen is broody, it usually takes 21 to 28 days for her to get over it.

Tracing A Harassing Phone Call

I want to know who has a cell phone number that’s calling me. How can I find this information?

It sounds like you are being harassed.  There are numerous ways to proceed.  But here is what I would do, in order of how I would do so.

1) Just type the phone number into Google or Yahoo or Bing.  Use the format xxx-xxx-xxxx and see what comes up.   This usually gives you a ton of reverse lookup sites.  These sites typically make their money by showing your advertisements when you click on them, but they are usually free and sometimes you can get lucky. How to get cell service in remote parts of the country?

It is my opinion that if a town lacks cell phone service (aka dead zone) it is bad for business. My question is who (city/county government, individuals etc) can get a provider, such as AT&T, to improve service. What tactics or venue would be most likely to succeed? My specific example is Oakwood, TX, but the answer might apply to other areas as well.

Most government entities have little to do with the big cell phone players like those you mention.  Unfortunately there are a few things that impact where and when/if cell providers will bring service.   1) FCC territories for towers, etc.   The FCC holds auctions for these territories years in advance Continue reading

Is Senator Cruz eligible to be President of the United States?

According to the United States Constitution, is Senator Ted Cruz of Texas eligible to hold the office of President if he runs and is elected?

While the issue of our current President’s birth certificate is hardly settled in the eyes of many people, the issue as it relates to Senator Cruz is a little more clear.

The Constitution states “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.” Continue reading

New Zealand Rabbits?

We are thinking rabbits. We’ve read New Zealand Whites are good. Do you agree? Where would we get a couple of breeding pairs?

When Ranae and I raised meat rabbits, we opted for New Zealand Does and California Bucks.   Both are excellent meat breeds, but we found the combination of the two breeds made for bigger litters and larger rabbits.  The more meat, the better in my opinion.   We also read some opinions, of other breeders, that California Does have some pregnancy issues from time to time.
